Many Catholic churches emphasize apostolic succession, the authority of Scripture and Tradition, and the sacraments. The Pope is recognized as the head of the church.
Protestant
Protestant traditions grew from the 16th century Reformation. They commonly emphasize Scripture alone (Sola Scriptura), faith alone (Sola Fide), and grace alone (Sola Gratia).
Evangelical
Evangelical churches typically emphasize the authority of the Bible, personal conversion (being 'born again'), and sharing the Gospel. This tradition spans many denominations.
Pentecostal
Pentecostal churches typically emphasize the baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, healing, and spiritual gifts. This tradition commonly emphasizes personal encounter with the Spirit.
Lutheran
Lutheran churches trace their heritage to Martin Luther's Reformation. Many Lutheran traditions emphasize justification by faith alone and the sacraments of baptism and communion.
Anglican / Episcopal
Anglican churches trace their roots to the Church of England. This tradition commonly holds both Catholic and Protestant elements. Practices vary widely across Anglican provinces worldwide.
Baptist
Baptist churches commonly emphasize believer's baptism by immersion, congregational church governance, and the priesthood of all believers. There are many Baptist associations worldwide.
Methodist
Methodist churches trace their heritage to John Wesley. Many Methodist traditions emphasize salvation available to all, sanctification, social justice, and methodical Christian living.
Reformed / Presbyterian
Reformed and Presbyterian churches trace their heritage to John Calvin. Many of these traditions emphasize God's sovereignty, covenant theology, and the Westminster Confession.
Seventh-day Adventist
Adventist churches commonly emphasize the Sabbath (Saturday worship), the Second Coming of Christ, and a holistic healthy lifestyle. Many Adventist communities are active in education and healthcare.
Non-denominational
Non-denominational churches are independent and typically do not align with a specific denominational tradition. They commonly emphasize the Bible, personal faith, and a welcoming community.
